Do you need a visa to study in the UK?

Students from the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland: If you are not already a resident in the UK or do not have settled/pre-settled status, you will need a Student visa to enter the UK for studies lasting longer than six months.

Students from non-European Union (EU) countries: All non-EU nationals must have a Student visa to enter the country before travelling to the UK, if coming for a course lasting more than six months.

A Student visa will also allow you to undertake work as part of your studies, look for a part-time job or bring your family to the UK as dependants.

Planning your move to the UK

Do we have everything we need to issue your CAS letter?

Once you confirm your acceptance of our offer to study, it is necessary to submit all the required evidence so that we can generate a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for you.

We will send your CAS letter via email, so please ensure that we have your latest email address and regularly check your inbox for any updates. Having your CAS letter is crucial as it is a prerequisite for applying for a visa. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you promptly provide us with all the requested evidence to avoid any delays in the process.

Applying for your visa

Once you receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter, you can apply for your visa application. You will need to apply within the three-months before the start of your course. Please note that visa applications typically require 15 working days for consideration (and may take longer for UKVI), so it is crucial to allocate sufficient time for the process. Be sure to plan accordingly and give yourself enough time.

Applying for a visa can be an overwhelming prospect, but we are here to guide you through every step of the process.

Applying for your visa in the UK

To apply for a student visa within the UK, you must not have, or have last been, granted permission as a:
> visitor
> short-term student
> parent of a child student
> seasonal worker
> domestic worker in a private household; or outside the immigration rules.

If you have current leave that allows you to apply from within the UK, this can only be done if there are less than 28 days between your current leave expiring and your course beginning. If you have a current Tier 4 (general) or Student visa and you have not successfully completed the course it was given for, you will not be able to apply within the UK.

If you need a new visa to complete a course you have already started with the ICMT, you will not be able to apply from within the UK unless:
> your visa extension is to undertake a work placement; or
> you need to extend due to resits/retakes and your visa has not been reported to the Home Office due to a gap in your studies.

Once you’ve applied, you can stay in the UK until you’ve been given a decision, as long as you applied before your last visa expired. If your previous leave was under a Tier 4 or Student visa, you will be allowed to enrol onto your new course before your previous visa expires. You will need evidence that you have applied for a new Student visa with a CAS from the ICMT.
